Family Meeting with President Biden Highlights Ongoing Fight for Justice
On the anniversary of George Floyd’s murder, his daughter Gianna, age 7, led a powerful chant of “Say his name. George Floyd,” outside the White House. This poignant moment followed a meeting between members of the Floyd family and President Biden, along with Vice President Harris.
Brandon Williams, Floyd’s nephew, shared that the family had a “great meeting” where they discussed the urgent need for the passage of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which remains stalled in Congress. Williams conveyed President Biden’s dissatisfaction with the missed deadline but noted that the President emphasizes the importance of ensuring the bill is meaningful and honors George Floyd’s legacy.
In a statement after the meeting, President Biden underscored the necessity of implementing more significant changes in policing beyond the conviction of Derek Chauvin, the former officer responsible for Floyd’s death. He remarked on the need for accountability when law enforcement officers violate their oaths and stressed the importance of building trust between police and the communities they serve. “We can and must have both accountability and trust in our justice system,” he affirmed.
