Authorities End Operation After 123 Hours and Extensive Coverage
The United States Coast Guard has officially suspended the search for 10 Cuban migrants who went missing after their boat capsized near Key West, Florida, last week. After a rigorous search lasting 123 hours and covering nearly 9,000 square miles, the decision to halt operations was made.
Captain Adam Chamie, commander of the Coast Guard’s Key West sector, expressed the difficulty of such decisions, stating, “The decision to suspend a search is always difficult and is made after careful consideration of all the facts. Our deepest condolences go out to the families and loved ones impacted by this tragedy.”
The incident unfolded last Thursday when two individuals lost their lives after the boat overturned approximately 18 miles southwest of Key West. The Coast Guard successfully rescued eight other passengers and initiated a search for the 10 individuals who were believed to be lost at sea.
Reports indicate that the survivors had departed from Puerto de Mariel, Cuba, on May 23 in hopes of reaching the United States. Tragically, their boat capsized four days later, just before the rescue operation commenced.
