David Ortiz Claims Partygoers Have Equal Rights to Enjoy the Space
The organizer behind the Washington Square Park raves, described as “out of control,” has asserted that partygoers have as much right to the space as local residents. The park in Manhattan, famous for its iconic marble arch, has seen an influx of late-night revelers as pandemic restrictions have eased.
Conflicts between police and partygoers have arisen, fueled by complaints from nearby residents regarding hard drug use, crime, and excessive noise. A recent incident escalated when a woman was trampled while attempting to flee from a man wielding a knife and a taser.
Party promoter David Ortiz stated that the crowds would not be evicted, emphasizing, “We’re going to be here every single day. Just like the police are, we are too. Because this is as much our home as to the other residents that actually live here.” He cited his First Amendment rights to freedom of speech and assembly in public spaces.
Ortiz, 28, noted that only “one percent” of the crowd is engaging in misbehavior. He described the situation as community policing, advocating for mutual accountability among attendees to prevent violence.
Despite admitting he had not informed community members of his party plans, Ortiz claimed he was denied access to a community board meeting this week. “I’m not here to bring animosity. We’re here to have a good time with the community and to amplify their voices,” he added.
Living in Queens, he asserted, “I’ve been here every single day of my life in Manhattan… What we do is we actually bring joy.”
