Global Leaders Converge to Address Surge in Gender-Based Violence Amid Pandemic

Call to Action at Generation Equality Forum in Paris to combat rising violence against women and girls

As the world continues to navigate the disparate impacts of Covid-19, another alarming pandemic has emerged, threatening the safety and well-being of half the global population. Early in the pandemic, the United Nations warned that quarantines and lockdowns could result in an additional 15 million cases of gender-based violence every three months, and unfortunately, these dire predictions seem to be materializing.

In response to this urgent crisis, world leaders and advocates are gathering at the Generation Equality Forum in Paris, both in person and online, to advocate for gender equality. At this pivotal event, I will urge governments, businesses, and individuals to participate in a global initiative with a proven track record in addressing gender-based violence. The goal is to eliminate the fear and insecurity that undermine the health, rights, dignity, and lives of countless women and girls worldwide.
