Japan’s evacuation efforts from Kabul have come under intense scrutiny after it was revealed that only one passenger, Hiromi Yasui, a 57-year-old business owner and stringer for Kyodo News, was evacuated on a C-130 flight on 27 August. The aircraft, which had the capacity to carry more than 500 passengers, instead carried just Yasui, leading to widespread criticism of Japan’s inadequate evacuation plans.
