Marcelo Queiroga Remains in Isolation in New York After Positive Test; Other Government Officials Test Negative
Brazil’s Health Minister, Marcelo Queiroga, has tested positive for COVID-19 in New York following President Jair Bolsonaro’s speech at the U.N. General Assembly. According to a government statement, Queiroga is in good health and will remain isolated in the U.S. after contracting the virus. He received his first dose of the coronavirus vaccine in January.
While Queiroga tested positive, other members of Brazil’s delegation in New York returned negative results, the statement clarified. Bolsonaro, who spoke at the U.N. assembly, has sparked controversy by ignoring the vaccine mandate for attendees, maintaining that vaccination is a personal choice despite his previous bout with COVID-19. Queiroga had been seen alongside Bolsonaro and other Brazilian officials throughout the week, including a photo with the first lady, Michele Bolsonaro, taken earlier on Tuesday.
