Marco Rubio Faces Backlash Over ‘Socialism’ Label on Child Tax Credit

Senator’s Comments on Pandemic Relief Spark Criticism Amid High Salary and Attendance Concerns

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio is under fire for labeling a proposal to expand pandemic child tax credits as “socialism” while earning five times the median American wage. Rubio, a Florida Republican, posted an attack ad on Twitter Wednesday targeting Val Demings, his Democratic rival in the 2022 U.S. Senate elections, calling her policies “too radical for moderates.” He criticized the idea of the government paying $300 per child each month, claiming it incentivizes not working. However, his comments quickly attracted criticism, with many mocking the notion that children should be working for their allowance. Critics also pointed out that Rubio’s annual salary of $174,000 is far above the median wage of $34,248, further fueling accusations of hypocrisy, particularly given his inconsistent attendance record.
