No New Restrictions in England but a Plea for Common Sense Leaves Many Uncertain
Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged the public to “enjoy yourselves cautiously” as England heads into the New Year without additional COVID-19 restrictions. This cautious celebration advice came during his visit to a vaccination center, as other UK nations and European countries have implemented stricter post-Christmas measures.
The message, however, has drawn criticism for its ambiguity. Many feel it’s the latest in a string of unclear communications from the government, recalling previous instructions like “don’t go to work, go to work.” This perceived inconsistency has left people questioning whether to “do go to parties, don’t go to parties.”
While ministers emphasize trusting in the public’s common sense, many had already adjusted their plans, heeding Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty’s earlier call to prioritize social contacts before the holidays. Yet, Johnson refrained from underscoring Whitty’s advice, leaving his guidance open to interpretation.
