Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro Hospitalized with Suspected Intestinal Blockage

Bolsonaro’s physician, returning from the Bahamas, will assess his condition following reports of severe stomach pain.

Early Monday morning, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was admitted to Hospital Vila Nova Star in São Paulo with a suspected intestinal blockage, according to local media reports. Bolsonaro had returned to Brasília from a coastal New Year break before his urgent hospitalization.

The president’s doctor, Antônio Luiz Macedo, who performed surgery on Bolsonaro after a 2018 stabbing incident, confirmed Bolsonaro’s complaint of stomach pain. Currently vacationing in the Bahamas, Dr. Macedo is awaiting a flight back to Brazil to evaluate Bolsonaro in person. Bolsonaro’s schedule for Monday reportedly included no public engagements.
