From Crimea to the Border: A Personal Perspective on Ukraine’s Fight and Global Indifference
As Russia continues to escalate its military presence along the Ukrainian border, the possibility of violence seems ever more imminent. The looming question is how the world will respond once Russian President Vladimir Putin pushes further with his aggressive actions. Are we ready to confront the reality of the situation?
Born in Ukraine but raised in the United States, I have a personal stake in this unfolding crisis, with most of my extended family still living in Ukraine. As such, I cannot pretend to be a neutral observer, nor do I wish to be. Despite the relentless online commentary — from both far-left “anti-imperialists” and far-right “let’s go Brandon” groups — arguing that Ukraine should “fight its own wars,” the truth is that Ukraine has been in a constant state of conflict with Russia since 2014, when Russia first annexed Crimea and began destabilizing Ukraine’s eastern regions. The ongoing war is not a new crisis but one that has been raging for years, largely unnoticed by the international community.
