A Bottle Across the Ocean: The Unexpected Journey of a Maryland Boy’s Message

How a Simple Note in a Bottle Led to an Irish Couple’s Unlikely Adventure

In 2019, an 11-year-old boy from Maryland tossed a bottle containing two $1 bills and a heartfelt note into the ocean. The note ended with a simple plea: “Please please call.”

Three years later, that bottle traveled an extraordinary 3,200 miles across the Atlantic Ocean, where it was discovered by Rita Simmonds, a 69-year-old woman from Ireland. Simmonds, along with her partner, immediately knew the discovery would lead them on an unexpected adventure. “We knew as soon as we found it that it was going to take us on an adventure,” Simmonds told The Washington Post, sharing the incredible story of how a small gesture on the part of a Maryland boy became a remarkable tale of global connection.
