University Staff Walkouts Threaten Students’ Graduation Plans

New Strike Ballots Could Lead to Continued Disruptions Throughout 2022

University students could face delays in their graduation as ongoing strike actions by university staff escalate, with the University and College Union (UCU) warning that walkouts could continue for the rest of the year. On Tuesday, the union announced it would open new ballots over issues related to pensions, pay, and working conditions, signaling further disruption.

The ballots, covering 149 universities, will run from March 16 to April 8, 2022, and include votes for both full strike action and “action short of a strike” (ASOS). This could lead to staff boycotting marking and assessments in the upcoming term, adding to the uncertainty for students hoping to complete their studies on time.
