New Federal Policies Include “X” Gender Marker on Passports and Gender-Neutral TSA Scanners
President Joe Biden is honoring Transgender Day of Visibility by highlighting the achievements of prominent transgender Americans and strongly opposing the rising wave of “anti-transgender legislative attacks” across state governments. In a show of support for the transgender community, Biden announced a series of new measures aimed at increasing inclusivity within the federal government.
Starting April 11, U.S. passport applications will include an “X” gender marker, a significant step in recognizing gender diversity. Additionally, new Transportation Security Administration (TSA) scanners will be introduced to accommodate all travelers without requiring them to identify by gender. Biden’s administration is also working to extend the “X” gender marker option to airlines and federal travel programs, making it easier for transgender individuals to update their gender information on official records, including with the Social Security Administration.
In a further move toward inclusivity, the White House Worker and Visitor Entry System will soon offer the option for visitors to select an “X” gender marker during screening.
In his proclamation for Transgender Day of Visibility, Biden stated, “Transgender Americans continue to face discrimination, harassment, and barriers to opportunity,” highlighting the ongoing challenge posed by anti-transgender bills across the country. He expressed strong opposition to these bills, particularly those targeting transgender youth, and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring equal rights and protection for transgender individuals.
