Sinn Féin Calls for Irish Reunification Poll After Assembly Victory

Mary Lou McDonald Urges Citizens’ Assembly for Irish Unity as Brexit Concerns Persist

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald has intensified calls for a referendum on Irish reunification, predicting the vote could take place within the next decade. Following her party’s victory in the Northern Ireland assembly election, McDonald urged for an all-Ireland citizens’ assembly to begin discussions on unification.

The situation in Northern Ireland is further complicated by post-Brexit tensions, with the unionist DUP insisting on major changes to the Northern Ireland protocol before agreeing to form a power-sharing executive with Sinn Féin. British Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab acknowledged that the country’s stability is at risk unless these issues are addressed.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to introduce new legislation to address Brexit promises and regain momentum after the Conservative Party’s disappointing local election results.
