Black History Month, Born from a Need for Recognition, Faces New Questions Amid Economic and Political Struggles
As we observe Black History Month (BHM) in the midst of economic instability and political unrest, it’s a time to pause, reflect, and celebrate the profound contributions Black people have made both historically and in the present day. The origins of BHM trace back to 1969, when Carter G. Woodson established the month to address the neglect of Black history in mainstream narratives. The recognition of Black history not only ensures visibility but also highlights the positive achievements of Black communities. However, with society facing increasing challenges, it’s crucial to ask: has the purpose of BHM truly led to meaningful change? This question remains especially relevant as we collectively navigate a turbulent moment in history, underscoring the need to recognize and build on what has been achieved, while acknowledging the work that still lies ahead.
