“Manchester United Drops Pride Jackets Amid Player Objection”

“Club’s decision sparks disappointment from LGBTQ+ supporters group and raises questions about inclusivity.”

Manchester United has cancelled plans to wear pride-themed warm-up jackets during their Rainbow Laces match against Everton after defender Noussair Mazraoui declined to participate due to his religious beliefs. This decision has drawn criticism, especially from Rainbow Devils, the club’s official LGBTQ+ supporters group.

Rainbow Devils expressed “great disappointment” over the reversal, which they learned was prompted by a player’s refusal. Reports suggest that Mazraoui, a Muslim, opted out for faith-based reasons, leading the team to collectively decide against wearing the jackets to maintain solidarity. Some players reportedly disagreed with this resolution.

United had worn similar pride-themed warm-up attire in past seasons, and Rainbow Devils had collaborated with the club to promote inclusivity leading up to the event. Adidas, which designed the jackets, also anticipated their use.

Mazraoui’s actions have reignited debates about faith and inclusivity in football, especially as the player previously faced criticism for supporting a Moroccan teammate who refused to wear rainbow symbols in Ligue 1. Elsewhere, Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi made headlines for inscribing “Jesus loves you” on his rainbow armband during a match, raising questions about personal expression within league guidelines.

Despite the controversy, Rainbow Devils emphasised their commitment to promoting inclusivity. A statement from the group acknowledged the player’s right to his beliefs but voiced concern over the incident’s impact on LGBTQ+ individuals within the club. The group plans to continue collaborating with Manchester United to ensure a welcoming environment for all fans and players at Old Trafford.
