Sparse Appearances and Limited Appeal Leave Viewers Disappointed
Prince Harry’s new Netflix docu-series, Polo, has received largely unfavourable reviews since its debut this week. Co-produced by Harry and Meghan, the series follows professional polo players as they navigate the 2024 season but has struggled to capture viewer interest.
Critics argue that while Harry has long been associated with the sport, the series focuses heavily on the sport itself rather than the Duke or Duchess. Meghan makes only a fleeting appearance in one scene with Nacho Figueras’s wife, Delfina Blaquier, at the Sentebale charity tournament sidelines. Serena Williams also appears briefly. However, Harry’s presence remains minimal, which has raised concerns among audiences and reviewers alike.
The Guardian gave the series a two-star rating, describing it as an “unintentionally hilarious profile of the world’s stupidest sport,” and critiquing it as a reflection of privilege without much substance. Similarly, The Telegraph labelled it as a “tedious inside look at posh polo,” noting that the Duke and Duchess “don’t hog the limelight” but that the series ultimately feels like “a dull indulgence.”
Decider also advised audiences to skip the series, deeming it “boring” and inaccessible for viewers unfamiliar with or disinterested in the sport. Despite these critiques, Decider conceded that the series could be educational for those interested in learning about polo itself.
Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams weighed in on X (formerly Twitter), expressing frustration with the series’ lack of focus and appeal. He remarked: “I’m angry that I’ve had to spend so much time watching this non-event… Where is the appeal for this 5-parter on Polo, an elitist sport?”
Netflix executives are reportedly disheartened by the documentary’s reception, particularly given Harry’s rare appearances. A Hollywood producer told Mail Online: “People want personal stuff. Apart from their documentary series, which had the drama of them quitting the Royal Family, everything else they’ve produced has been underwhelming.”
The producer also noted that polo, while a niche sport, could have drawn attention solely because of Harry’s involvement. “That he’s not in it much is hugely disappointing for Netflix,” they added.
The series’ mixed reception suggests that Polo has struggled to balance its focus on the sport and the personal story viewers expected, leaving questions about whether audiences will connect with the elite pastime or Prince Harry’s relatively minor role.
