Actress Susan Hampshire, 87, Speaks Out After Being Mugged on London Tube

The Star of Monarch of the Glen and The Grand Loses Phone and Purse in Shocking Incident

Veteran actress Susan Hampshire, 87, was left stunned after being mugged on the London Underground earlier this week, losing both her phone and purse during the ordeal.

Best known for her roles in Monarch of the Glen, The Grand, and The Royal, Hampshire briefly shared her experience at a Talking Pictures event in London. “I was mugged on the underground the other day. I wish I’d put my money in my bra because I lost my phone and my purse,” she revealed.

Despite the traumatic incident, the Emmy Award-winning actress appeared upbeat at the event, with little more detail about the mugging shared.

Hampshire’s career began in 1947 at just 10 years old, and she quickly became a beloved figure in British television, particularly known for her work in BBC miniseries.

Her mugging comes amid a growing concern about increasing crime on London’s transport network, with 2023 marking the worst year on record for violent crime on the Tube.

Recent statistics show that reported crimes on the Underground surged by 52% compared to 2022, with a total of 22,562 incidents. As the UK government introduces a new Bill to tackle crime, police will be granted new powers to search properties for stolen phones without a warrant, which could allow for faster recovery of stolen items.
