Usher: Reinvention, Influence, and His Passion for British Style

The R&B icon reflects on his London residency, musical inspirations, and why Ed Sheeran’s minimalist approach fascinates him.

Usher has taken over London with a spectacular 10-night residency at The O2, bringing his signature energy, showmanship, and a touch of Vegas-style grandeur to British audiences. The global superstar sat down with Dylan Jones to discuss his career evolution, his deep appreciation for UK fashion, and his admiration for artists who strip performance down to its rawest form.

Reflecting on his journey, the 46-year-old recalls how international experiences shaped his artistry. “Travelling to London and Europe early in my career helped broaden my horizons,” he says. After completing an extensive Las Vegas residency, he has seamlessly transitioned into his London shows, fine-tuning his craft with military precision. His performances at The O2 are an electrifying blend of nostalgia and innovation, featuring roller skating, backflips, and a meticulously curated setlist spanning his nine chart-topping albums.

Fashion has played a significant role in this latest chapter of his career. “Coming to London, I wanted to honour the UK’s style, not just American fashion,” he explains, citing collaborations with British designers like David Koma and Burberry. He sees fashion as an extension of storytelling, adding dramatic flair to his performances while staying true to his artistic vision.

Beyond music and style, Usher is deeply engaged with social issues. He praises London’s multiculturalism and compares it to the challenges of racial division in the US. “You see different people working together here—it’s integrated in a way that America has struggled with,” he reflects. He’s also passionate about recognising Black cultural contributions, highlighting how Europe sometimes offers greater visibility to Black artists than his home country.

Despite his larger-than-life stage presence, Usher is drawn to the simplicity of storytelling in music. He admires Ed Sheeran’s ability to command stadiums with just a guitar and a few T-shirts. “The scale of what he does with so little is incredible,” he says. While his own performances are packed with spectacle, he acknowledges the power of intimate, stripped-back artistry.

For Usher, reinvention is key. Whether through fashion, music, or activism, he remains dedicated to pushing boundaries while staying true to his roots. As he continues his residency at The O2, one thing is clear—his passion for entertaining and inspiring audiences is as strong as ever.
