A Closer Look at Cricket’s Three Formats: Test, ODI, and Twenty20

From the ICC Test Championship to the World Cup, cricket’s formats attract global audiences.

Cricket has evolved into three primary formats: Test, One Day International (ODI), and Twenty20, each offering unique competition styles. The ICC Test Championship involves nine teams competing over a two-year cycle, culminating in a final to crown the champion. In 2021, New Zealand claimed the first Test Championship title with a memorable win over India.

ODIs have a longer history, with the World Cup first held in 1975. Australia leads in victories, winning five times (1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, and 2015). England most recently won in 2019, edging out New Zealand in a thrilling super-over at Lord’s.

Twenty20, the game’s shortest format, has rapidly gained popularity with several highly profitable tournaments around the world. Australia currently holds the title after winning the 2021 T20 World Cup.
