Best Known for His Roles in “Man About The House” and “George and Mildred”
Brian Murphy, the renowned actor and comedian, has passed away at the age of 92. He was widely recognised for his memorable performances in the classic 1970s sitcoms Man About The House and George and Mildred.
The sad news was shared by his wife, actress Linda Regan, who starred in Hi-de-Hi!. In a heartfelt tribute, she posted a photo of herself kissing Brian and wrote: “My love for you will never die. RIP, sweetheart.”
Brian died peacefully at his Kent home on Sunday morning, surrounded by Linda, his wife of 35 years. She expressed her sorrow, saying, “I was so fortunate to have found my soulmate in this lifetime. Brian will be loved forever.”
His long-time friend and agent, Thomas Bowington, described him as a “truly joyful and profoundly good-hearted man.”
Murphy initially gained fame for his portrayal of George Roper, the landlord in Man About The House, a role he played alongside the late Yootha Joyce. The show, which aired from 1973, was considered groundbreaking for its time, featuring two single women living with a man.
Following the conclusion of Man About The House in 1976, Murphy continued his success with the spin-off series George and Mildred, where he reprised his role with Joyce. The show ran for five seasons, concluding in 1979.
Beyond these iconic roles, Brian also starred as Alvin Smedley in the long-running series Last of the Summer Wine.
Murphy, who hailed from the Isle of Wight, was part of Joan Littlewood’s Theatre Workshop before becoming a familiar face on television, making appearances in popular series like Z-Cars. In 1993, he also featured in the first major stage adaptation of H.G. Wells’ The Invisible Man.
More recently, he appeared in shows such as Holby City on BBC and Benidorm on ITV.
Brian Murphy leaves behind his wife, Linda, and their two sons.
