Anti-abortion rights group slams Ron DeSantis on his failure to back a national ban

Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America’s president criticized DeSantis for not supporting a national abortion ban

An anti-abortion rights group, Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, strongly criticized Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for not backing a national abortion ban, a position that has caused division within the GOP presidential race.

DeSantis recently declined to give a direct answer about his stance on a federal ban in an interview on the Megyn Kelly show. While he expressed his pro-life views and commitment to being a “pro-life president,” he focused more on actions he believes he can accomplish at the state level, citing success in places like Iowa, South Carolina, and Florida.

When asked about his support for a national ban on abortion, DeSantis emphasized that he would always advocate for life but did not definitively commit to a federal law. His comments drew backlash from Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, who demanded stronger leadership on the issue.

Dannenfelser argued that there is a growing consensus in favor of protecting unborn babies from at least the point they can feel pain at 15 weeks, with some states pushing for stronger protections. She expressed disappointment in DeSantis’s failure to support such a position at the national level, calling it “unacceptable” to pro-life voters.

DeSantis’s position remains unclear, especially after signing a controversial law in Florida banning abortions after six weeks of pregnancy. His reluctance to advocate for a national ban may alienate some conservative voters, as his approach centers more on state-level legislation than on federal mandates.

The debate continues to fuel tensions in the GOP primary, with different candidates taking varying stances on the issue of abortion. DeSantis’s inability to fully commit to a national ban could have significant ramifications for his standing among the party’s pro-life base.
