ZTF J1813+4251, a Rare Pair of Stars, Challenges Our Understanding of Cosmic Interactions
Astronomers have confirmed a long-standing theory about binary stars with the discovery of ZTF J1813+4251, a unique star system located 3,000 light-years away in the constellation Hercules. The system consists of a Sun-like star and a white dwarf, a dense remnant of a burned-out star. These stars are locked in a tight orbit, with the white dwarf stealing material from its companion star, creating periodic flashes of light. This system, known as a cataclysmic variable, exhibits the closest orbit of any such pair discovered, with the two stars completing a full orbit in just 51 minutes. This discovery validates a 30-year-old theory about binary star behavior, as outlined by MIT astrophysicist Kevin Burdge and his team in a paper published in Nature.
