Bernie Sanders Joins Crowded Rhode Island Democratic Primary Race

The Vermont senator backs Aaron Regunberg in a critical primary that reflects shifting party dynamics.

Bernie Sanders has entered the crowded Rhode Island special congressional primary race, adding his voice to an already competitive field of 12 Democratic candidates vying for the seat vacated by Rep. David Cicilline. The primary, set for September 5, will likely serve as a significant indicator of where the Democratic Party stands as it enters a new political phase without the backdrop of a presidential election.

Sanders, the independent senator from Vermont, is endorsing Aaron Regunberg, a former state representative, in a bid to unite progressives against the more establishment-backed candidates. Regunberg’s campaign is focused on challenging the influence of large corporations on politics and economics, an issue central to Sanders’ long-standing platform.

In his endorsement, Sanders highlighted Regunberg’s commitment to making government work for ordinary people, rather than for corporations and billionaires. Regunberg, 33, has built a progressive coalition, securing endorsements from the Congressional Progressive Caucus PAC, the Rhode Island Working Families Party, and influential progressive lawmakers such as Reps. Jamie Raskin and Ro Khanna.

However, some local left-wing groups have criticized Regunberg, arguing that his positions do not go far enough to the left. Despite these criticisms, Regunberg views Sanders as a key influence on his political career. He praised Sanders as an “American hero” and credited him with inspiring younger generations of progressives to believe that meaningful change is possible.

The September 5 primary will be closely watched as it could set the tone for future intraparty battles, especially in districts where progressives and establishment Democrats are competing for control. Though the outcome of the race may not shift the balance of power in Congress, both factions of the party view it as crucial in determining the future direction of the Democratic Party. The winner is expected to easily secure victory in the general election scheduled for the following month.
