Lula and Bolsonaro Target Key Voters with Strategic Campaign Stops
Brazil’s two presidential contenders, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and incumbent Jair Bolsonaro, focused on consolidating support from their traditional bases on Wednesday. Da Silva, the former president, campaigned among the poor in Rio de Janeiro’s Alemao slum, while Bolsonaro appeared among the faithful at the vast Aparecida basilica in Sao Paulo state.
Earlier this month, da Silva topped the first round of voting with 48% of the vote, while Bolsonaro secured 43%. Since neither candidate garnered enough votes for an outright victory, they are set for a runoff on October 30. Both candidates are now leaning on their respective strongholds, choosing to celebrate the nation’s patron saint, Our Lady of Aparecida, in environments where they feel most at ease.
