Critically Endangered Sumatran Tiger Dies After Being Caught in Poacher’s Trap

The death of the female tiger highlights the ongoing threats faced by the critically endangered species.

A female Sumatran tiger, aged between 4 and 5 years, has been found dead after becoming ensnared in a poacher’s trap on Indonesia’s Sumatra island, authorities confirmed. The tiger, which had been trapped near the Bukit Batu wildlife reserve in Riau province, died from dehydration five days after sustaining injuries from the trap, which broke one of its legs. The incident has drawn attention to the severe threats facing Sumatran tigers, with fewer than 400 estimated to remain in the wild. Conservation officials have pledged to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in investigating the poaching, which continues to endanger the species as their jungle habitat rapidly shrinks.
