EastEnders Star Defends the Capital’s Chippies After Singer’s Criticism
British actor Danny Dyer has hit back at Ed Sheeran after the singer dismissed London’s traditional fish and chip shops, claiming they don’t measure up to those by the sea.
Sheeran, 34, recently told Instagram interview platform Topjaw that he believes fish and chips should only be eaten with a seaside view. “It’s like getting sushi in Alabama,” he quipped when asked about overrated London restaurants.
Dyer, 47, wasn’t impressed. The proud East Londoner shot back, telling The Standard, “Only someone who isn’t from London would say that.” He then added, “He’s from Ipswich, which says it all, really.”
The Codfather Strikes Back
Currently, Dyer is on a mission to put a fresh spin on Britain’s most beloved takeaway. Teaming up with Frank’s RedHot Sauce, he’s stepping into his new role as “The Codfather” to champion an upgrade to the classic dish.
“Nothing beats a proper chippy tea,” Dyer enthused. “It’s a British staple, and when you throw Frank’s RedHot into the mix—blimey, it’s something else! It adds just the right kick without melting your face off.”
A Career Full of Saucy Moments
Beyond his love for fish and chips, Dyer also reflected on some of his more unconventional experiences on set. He admitted that filming intimate scenes can be challenging, recalling a particularly awkward moment from the 1999 film Human Traffic.
“I had to, you know… pleasure myself on camera in front of 40 people,” he shared. “Still haunts me, to be fair. I think everyone in that room was traumatised.”
While Sheeran and Dyer may disagree on the capital’s chip shops, one thing’s for sure—Dyer isn’t about to let anyone, especially an Ipswich native, take a dig at London’s food scene without a fight.
