Nepal announces plans to move Everest base camp to a lower altitude to preserve it from climate change and heavy foot traffic.
In response to the growing threats posed by global warming and human activity, Nepal’s iconic Everest base camp will be relocated from its current position on the Khumbu glacier. Situated at 5,364 meters, the base camp has been increasingly impacted by the melting glacier, attracting large numbers of trekkers—about 1,500 visitors this past spring.
The new location for the base camp will be situated 200-400 meters lower in altitude, where year-round ice is no longer present. Taranath Adhikari, director general of Nepal’s tourism department, confirmed the plans, stating that consultations with all relevant stakeholders will begin soon. This relocation is seen as crucial to protecting the environment while continuing to support the thriving tourism industry.
