Fashion Industry’s Environmental Impact: A Growing Concern

The fashion sector is one of the leading contributors to global greenhouse gas emissions and environmental damage.

The fashion industry is responsible for approximately 10 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, making it the fifth largest polluting sector in the world, according to the World Economic Forum. As shoppers become more aware of the environmental consequences of their purchases, the impact of fast fashion is increasingly under scrutiny.

Each year, the clothing industry consumes around 93 billion cubic meters of water, enough to meet the needs of five million people, as reported by the United Nations. It also contributes to the annual dumping of over half a million tons of microfibers, equivalent to three million barrels of oil, into the oceans. Furthermore, more than half of discarded clothing ends up in landfills, further exacerbating the industry’s environmental footprint.
