The GOP-led House investigation will target President Biden’s alleged misconduct and corruption.
On September 12, 2023, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced that he was directing three House committees to launch an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, citing concerns about corruption, abuse of power, and obstruction. McCarthy stated that the investigation would provide the House with full powers to gather evidence and ensure transparency for the American public.
The inquiry will focus on obtaining bank records and other documents related to Biden and his son, Hunter Biden, and is expected to further investigate allegations of misconduct in the president’s actions during his time in office. McCarthy emphasized that the inquiry was a “logical next step” in the ongoing investigations, which have already uncovered serious allegations about the president’s conduct.
The investigation will be led by Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, with support from Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan and Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith. While McCarthy’s decision represents a significant shift, particularly after previously stating he would require a full House vote before moving forward, the inquiry will not immediately result in a vote to impeach Biden.
Democrats have strongly criticized the move, with White House spokesperson Ian Sams pointing out that after nine months of investigation, Republicans have not uncovered any evidence of wrongdoing. He accused McCarthy of flip-flopping on his position and indulging in “extreme politics.” Meanwhile, Hunter Biden’s lawyer dismissed the inquiry as based on unfounded conspiracies.
Some Republicans, however, expressed strong support for the impeachment inquiry, with figures like Rep. Scott Perry and Sen. Josh Hawley backing the move. They argued that it was necessary to uncover the truth about the alleged “culture of corruption” surrounding the Bidens. Conversely, Democrats have dismissed the inquiry as politically motivated, with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer calling it “absurd” and mocking the efforts of the GOP.
