The monarch shares a selection of his favourite songs, featuring legends and rising stars, in a special radio broadcast
King Charles has taken on the role of DJ for a one-off radio special, unveiling a personal playlist to mark Commonwealth Day. The selection spans various genres, including disco, reggae, and Afrobeats, highlighting both classic icons and contemporary talents.
Recorded from his office at Buckingham Palace, the broadcast sees the King reminiscing about meeting renowned musicians while revealing tracks that make it “impossible to sit still.”
His chosen songs feature legendary artists like Bob Marley, Grace Jones, and Diana Ross, alongside modern stars such as Davido and multiple Brit Award-winner Raye. One track that particularly stands out is Kylie Minogue’s The Loco-Motion. The King enthusiastically describes it as “music for dancing” with an “infectious energy” that he finds hard to resist.
The playlist even includes non-Commonwealth artists like Beyoncé, in recognition of her support for The King’s Trust charity. Speaking about Diana Ross’s Upside Down, the monarch shares a nostalgic sentiment: “This was one of my absolute favourites when I was younger… and it was impossible not to get up and dance!”
Though the decision to participate in the broadcast surprised some, it is seen as an effort to connect with younger, more diverse audiences. Later today, the King will attend the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey.
Errollyn Wallen, Master of the King’s Music, commented: “This playlist reflects His Majesty’s broad passion for music. The Commonwealth has an extraordinary musical heritage, and this vibrant collection celebrates its rich creativity.”
While the final playlist was ultimately the King’s own choice, insiders say he sought advice from musically knowledgeable friends before making his selections—spending time at Sandringham personally listening to the longlist before giving his approval.
