King Charles Makes First Public Appearance Since Hospital Stay for Cancer Treatment

Monarch Waves to Well-Wishers After Cancelling Engagements Due to Temporary Side Effects

King Charles III has been seen in public for the first time since a brief hospital observation following side effects from his ongoing cancer treatment.

The 76-year-old monarch was spotted leaving Clarence House in London on Friday morning, waving at well-wishers from his car as he travelled towards his Highgrove estate in Gloucestershire. His appearance follows the cancellation of a planned visit to Birmingham after doctors advised rest.

Hospital Visit and Medical Update
Buckingham Palace confirmed that after a scheduled treatment session on Thursday, the King experienced mild side effects requiring short-term medical observation. While the palace reassured the public that his overall progress remains positive, his team described the hospital stay as a “minor setback” in his recovery.

King Charles first disclosed his cancer diagnosis in February 2024 and has since been undergoing treatment. Sources indicated late last year that therapy would continue into 2025, with promising results so far.

A Sudden Change in Plans
The cancellation of engagements, including Friday’s Birmingham tour, is unusual for the King, who has remained committed to his duties despite his diagnosis. His absence raised some concern, but palace officials emphasised that he is expected to resume his schedule next week.

Aides have described his approach to work as a key source of strength during his illness. Observers noted that the decision to publicly acknowledge this brief health episode highlights the unpredictability of his condition.

Public Reaction
Tourists and royal watchers expressed relief at seeing the King looking well. Julian Mati, 34, who had been visiting Buckingham Palace, said: “We were shocked when we heard the news yesterday. Seeing him smiling today is such a relief.”

In an official statement, Buckingham Palace expressed the King’s regret over any inconvenience caused by his cancelled appointments.

Despite this temporary pause, King Charles remains active in royal duties, having hosted an event at Buckingham Palace earlier this week and recently completed a three-day visit to Northern Ireland.
