Max George from The Wanted to Undergo Immediate Heart Surgery

Singer reveals diagnosis of “2:1 block” and urgent need for operation

Max George, best known for his role in The Wanted, has announced that he will need urgent heart surgery after being diagnosed with a “2:1 block.” The singer shared his health update with fans following his recent hospital admission earlier this month.

A heart block is a condition in which the heart beats more slowly or with an irregular rhythm, caused by issues with the electrical signals that regulate the heartbeat, as defined by the NHS.

After undergoing a scan on Monday following his admission five days earlier, George disclosed that his heart rate had not improved. In an Instagram post, the 36-year-old explained: “Because of this, we don’t have too much time to wait so it looks like I’m going to be in surgery way quicker than the doctors first thought. I may even be home for Christmas.”

George described the experience as “scary” and said the past few nights have been difficult. However, he expressed gratitude for the overwhelming messages of support from fans, friends and family, which he called “a much-needed boost.”

Alongside his health concerns, the singer shared images from his hospital bed and reflected on the full CT scan process, admitting: “It’s not something I’d choose to do again.”

The singer rose to prominence as part of The Wanted in the early 2010s with hits such as All Time Low, Glad You Came and Chasing The Sun. His musical career has expanded, including a stint on Strictly Come Dancing in 2020—where he met his girlfriend, former EastEnders star Maisie Smith—and appearances in the US musical series Glee.

George’s health announcement comes two years after the passing of his bandmate Tom Parker, who tragically died from an inoperable brain tumour in 2022 at the age of 33. Before his death, the band reunited to raise awareness and funding for brain cancer research.

Just weeks ago, George and bandmate Siva Kaneswaran revealed plans to relaunch The Wanted 2.0, with three live shows confirmed for 2025. Despite this personal health setback, the singer remains hopeful about his future plans and recovery.
