Merkel Warns of Challenges in Achieving EU’s Green Deal Emission Targets

German Chancellor acknowledges difficulties in meeting ambitious carbon-reduction goals.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed on Thursday that fulfilling the European Union’s ambitious targets for reducing emissions will be “very hard work.” Speaking at a ceremony in Spain where she received a European prize, Merkel highlighted the challenges ahead in achieving the goals set by the European Green Deal. This plan, agreed upon last December, aims to reduce gas emissions by 55% over the current decade and to make the EU carbon-neutral by 2050. Merkel’s comments reflect the difficulties of meeting these targets despite the EU’s commitment to addressing climate change.
