Twin Brothers Reflect on Personal Struggles and Growth in Face of Cerebral Palsy Awareness
Michael Kutcher, the twin brother of actor Ashton Kutcher, recently revealed his feelings of “very anger” after his brother publicly discussed his cerebral palsy diagnosis during a 2003 interview. Michael, who has lived with the condition since being diagnosed at the age of three, expressed that he did not want to be recognized as the “face of CP” and had never intended for his private struggles to become public.
“I was very angry. Very angry. I remember speaking to him about it,” Michael shared in an interview with Today. Despite his initial reaction, he now appreciates Ashton’s decision, seeing it as a pivotal moment that allowed him to embrace his true identity. Referring to his twin by his real name, Chris, Michael stated, “Chris did me the biggest favor he’s ever done because he allowed me to be myself.”
After his diagnosis became widely known, Michael was approached by a woman who invited him to speak at a gala about his experiences. This interaction was transformative; the woman brought her five-year-old daughter, Bella, who also has cerebral palsy. This meeting made Michael realize he needed to shed the shame he had felt and become a voice for others living with the condition. “I realized I needed to let go of the shame I felt and be a champion for people like Bella,” he reflected. “I was finally ready to tell my story, and I knew because of my twin, I’d have a big reach.”
During the interview, Michael also shared memories of growing up alongside Ashton, highlighting how his brother often defended him against bullies. One particularly memorable incident involved the brothers riding their bikes when Ashton confronted a group of bullies who were taunting Michael.
