Militants Seize Train in Pakistan, Holding Hundreds Hostage

Security forces engage in gunfight as efforts to free passengers continue

Armed militants hijacked a packed passenger train in Balochistan, trapping hundreds of travellers as security forces launched a rescue operation.

The Jaffar Express, carrying 425 people, including women and children, was en route from Quetta to Peshawar when attackers detonated explosives on the railway tracks, halting the train inside a tunnel in Bolan. Gunmen then stormed the carriages, taking control and holding around 250 hostages.

Authorities confirmed at least 10 deaths, including the train’s driver and eight security personnel, while 30 militants were reported killed in clashes with government forces. A further 37 passengers sustained injuries and are receiving medical treatment.

Eyewitnesses described the chaotic scene, with gunfire erupting from all directions. One survivor recounted how militants first struck the engine with a rocket-propelled grenade before opening fire, forcing passengers to disembark under threat of execution.

“Everyone was terrified, lying on the floor as bullets flew past,” said Bashir Yousaf, who was travelling with his family. “We were ordered to leave the train and not to look back. I just kept moving, fearing for our lives.”

Pakistan’s prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, condemned the attack, stating that security forces were working to neutralise the militants. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi labelled the assailants “enemies of the state,” vowing to thwart any attempts to destabilise the country.

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) has claimed responsibility, demanding the release of political prisoners and activists within 48 hours. The group has threatened to execute hostages if its demands are not met.

Military personnel remain on high alert as operations to secure the train and rescue the remaining hostages continue.
