Spacecraft Provides Early Views of Asteroid Pair Before Impact
NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) has provided its first image of the asteroid Dimorphos, the target of its impact. The fuzzy composite image, captured from approximately 20 million miles away, shows Dimorphos alongside its larger companion, Didymos. Both asteroids appear as faint points of light in the images taken by the Didymos Reconnaissance and Asteroid Camera for Optical Navigation (DRACO) on 27 July. These images were released by NASA in a blog post on Wednesday, offering a glimpse into the spacecraft’s approach prior to the planned collision.
