Global Research Unveils the Vast Unexplored Diversity of Trees and Highlights Environmental Risks

A groundbreaking international study has uncovered that more than 9,000 tree species remain undiscovered, bringing the total estimated number of tree species on Earth to around 73,000. This research, which involved over 100 scientists and the largest forest database ever assembled, indicates that there is still much to learn about the planet’s tree diversity.

The study also highlights a concerning reality: many of the undiscovered species are rare, with small populations and limited geographic ranges. These trees are highly vulnerable to threats like deforestation and climate change, which exacerbate the risks of extinction. As the global climate crisis continues to escalate, the loss of these species could have profound effects on biodiversity and ecosystems worldwide.
