Philippines Christmas Marked by Loss and Destruction After Typhoon Rai

Over 375 Dead and Hundreds of Thousands Displaced as Typhoon Ravages Central Islands

This Christmas, hundreds of thousands of people in the Philippines are facing devastation after Typhoon Rai wreaked havoc across the country. The storm, which struck on December 16, left at least 375 people dead and caused extensive damage, particularly in central island provinces. More than 371,000 homes were either damaged or destroyed, leaving families without shelter, adequate food, or water.

The typhoon’s impact came as the nation was recovering from a surge in Covid-19 cases earlier in the year, with the easing of restrictions and an increase in vaccinations helping to control the spread. Despite the easing of the pandemic, the storm has now left many without electricity or mobile connections, forcing many to mark Christmas in dire circumstances.
