Quitter’s Day: Why Fitness Resolutions Tend to Fade in January

Strava Data Reveals the Day Most People Give Up on Their New Year’s Fitness Goals

January often carries with it a sense of hope and possibility, especially as people set their New Year’s resolutions to become healthier, fitter versions of themselves. While these resolutions are widespread—particularly in the UK, where a quarter of Brits vow to better their physical health—they often meet an early demise.

The phenomenon, known as Quitter’s Day, marks the day when many people abandon their fitness goals, and in 2019, sports platform Strava pinpointed it as the third Monday of January. However, after analyzing global athlete data, Strava has now announced that the timing of Quitter’s Day may no longer be accurate. Despite the shift, the reality remains: fitness resolutions often struggle to survive past the initial optimism of the New Year.
