Sturgeon Moon: The Last Super Moon of 2022

The full Moon on 11 August will peak at 9:36 PM EDT, offering a spectacular view of this year’s final Super Moon.

The full Moon on Thursday, 11 August, marks the last “Super Moon” of 2022, depending on how it’s defined. Known as the Sturgeon Moon, it will reach its peak at 9:36 PM EDT, though it will appear largest as it rises in the east at sunset. The Sturgeon Moon got its name from the Algonquin tribes, who noticed sturgeon fish were more abundant during this time. A Super Moon occurs when the Moon is at its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit, appearing 14 to 30 percent brighter than a typical full Moon at its farthest point (apogee). This spectacular sight will be the final Super Moon of the year.
