Authorities Increase Surveillance, Yet Beachgoers Continue to Enter the Water
Sydney’s beaches, including the well-known Bondi Beach, were shut down on Thursday following a fatal shark attack that took a swimmer’s life the previous day. Despite the closures, determined beachgoers still ventured into the water. In response, authorities have deployed drum lines as bait along the coast and are conducting patrols with drones, police boats, jet skis, and a helicopter to locate the shark. Emergency services were summoned to Little Bay Beach around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday after human remains were found. Though officials in New South Wales have not disclosed the victim’s identity, lifeguards are working to keep swimmers out of nearby waters, urging around 40 people to exit Coogee Beach on Thursday. “We’ve been telling people to get out,” a lifeguard reported, adding that their options are currently limited.
