A bipartisan committee demands Amazon address discrepancies in testimony about its competition practices or face legal consequences.
U.S. House lawmakers have escalated their investigation into Amazon’s market practices, threatening a criminal investigation unless the company corrects previous testimony by its executives. In a letter sent to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, the House Judiciary Committee gave Amazon until Nov. 1 to provide new documents and evidence addressing alleged misleading statements made to Congress. The lawmakers accuse Amazon of undercutting third-party sellers by producing knock-off products and promoting them on its platform, which contradicts prior testimony from Amazon executives. The committee warned that failure to comply could lead to a referral for a criminal investigation by the Justice Department. The letter was signed by both Democratic and Republican leaders of the antitrust subcommittee.
