Ukraine is taking the war to Moscow

A deadly drone attack hits Russia’s capital.

For over two years, Russia has relentlessly bombarded Ukrainian cities from the skies, with missiles and drones targeting hospitals, apartment buildings, and civilian infrastructure. The Ukrainian population has grown accustomed to air-raid alerts and the constant threat of aerial attacks. Now, Ukraine is turning the tables, taking the war to Russia’s heart.

On the night of 9 September, a large-scale drone assault struck multiple regions in western Russia. Hundreds of long-range attack drones crossed the border, with some reaching the outskirts of Moscow. The capital’s airports were forced to close, and several residential blocks in the suburbs were damaged. Videos shared on social media showed flames engulfing high-rise buildings and explosions lighting up the night sky.

The Russian authorities confirmed the attack, reporting that a 46-year-old woman was killed in the suburb of Ramenskoye. The Russian Ministry of Defence claimed to have intercepted and downed 144 drones during the assault. As of the latest reports, Ukraine’s military had not officially commented on the attack.

This escalation represents a significant shift in the war, with Ukraine now actively targeting Russian territory, marking a symbolic strike against the heart of Russia’s power. While the Ukrainian government has not officially claimed responsibility, the scale and precision of the attack suggest it is part of an ongoing strategy to directly challenge Russia’s aggression. The consequences of this action remain to be seen, but it signals a new phase in the conflict that has already reshaped the security landscape in both Ukraine and Russia.
