Biden Honors the Beloved Children’s Author in National Literacy Celebration
The White House has announced that Dr. Seuss books will once again be part of its annual Read Across America Day celebration, reversing last year’s exclusion of the author’s works. President Joe Biden formally proclaimed March 2 as National Read Across America Day, an event traditionally held on the birthday of Dr. Seuss and founded in 1998 by the National Education Association to encourage children’s literacy.
“For many young Americans, the path to literacy begins with treasured and timeless traditions,” Biden noted in his proclamation. He praised Dr. Seuss classics like Green Eggs and Ham and Oh, the Places You’ll Go! for inspiring “a passion for reading and endless creativity that spans generations.” The return of Seuss’s works to the event underscores their enduring influence on childhood reading in the U.S.
