The passenger bus left the roadway and overturned on Interstate 20 in Warren County early Saturday morning, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
Seven individuals, including a 6-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, lost their lives when a passenger bus en route from Atlanta to Dallas overturned on Interstate 20 in Mississippi early Saturday. Thirty-six additional passengers were injured in the crash, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, which responded at approximately 12:40 a.m. near Warren County.
The bus, which was headed westbound, veered off the road before overturning. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reported that a “tire failure” occurred, though the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation. No other vehicles were involved.
Among the deceased, six were pronounced dead at the scene, while one succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital. The victims, all from Guatemala, included two young siblings, the Warren County Coroner’s Office confirmed. Their names are withheld pending family notification.
All surviving passengers, totaling 36, were transported to local hospitals with varying degrees of injury. Initial reports by the Highway Patrol mistakenly listed 37 injured individuals. The bus’s manifest listed 41 passengers, excluding two drivers who were onboard.
The bus, identified as a 2018 Volvo model and owned by Regiomontanos Autobuses, is registered to a Texas-based company with an office in Atlanta. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s records indicate that, in the past two years, the company’s vehicles were involved in one fatal crash, two injury incidents, and one minor collision requiring a tow.
The crash underscores the challenges faced in ensuring passenger safety, as investigators continue to examine both mechanical and human factors involved in this tragic accident.
