Antarctic Researcher Accused of Threatening Colleagues Issues Apology

South African department confirms intervention at remote scientific base after reported conflict

An Antarctic researcher accused of making threats against colleagues while stationed at a remote South African research base has formally apologised, according to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE).

The incident, which occurred at the Sanae IV station in Queen Maude Land, came to light after team members sent an urgent email to South Africa last month requesting assistance. Reports indicated that one of the nine-member overwintering team had attacked another researcher and was making further threats.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the DFFE confirmed that an internal investigation was conducted after an alleged altercation on 27 February. The accused, who has since undergone psychological evaluation, reportedly expressed remorse and agreed to cooperate with recommended interventions.

Officials stated that the individual has written a formal apology to the affected team member and is willing to issue a verbal apology to the entire team. The department has also introduced a long-term counselling programme to restore relationships and maintain a healthy working environment at the base.

The DFFE acknowledged the psychological challenges of working in Antarctica, where extreme isolation, freezing temperatures, and high winds contribute to mental and emotional strain. Despite rigorous selection processes—including psychometric evaluations and team-building exercises—adjusting to the harsh environment can still be difficult.

The department assured that the situation is being closely managed by Minister Dion George and Director-General Nomfundo Tshabalala, with ongoing mediation efforts in place. It also refuted claims of sexual assault at the base but confirmed that allegations of sexual harassment are being reviewed.

The overwintering team remains stationed over 2,500 miles from South Africa’s coast, enduring temperatures below -20°C and wind speeds reaching 150 mph. The DFFE reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the well-being of all personnel at the base while maintaining discipline and safety protocols.
