Jewelry Store Ransacked in Sunnyvale; Five Arrested After High-Speed Pursuit

A robbery crew hit a jewelry store in Sunnyvale, leading to police chases and multiple arrests.

On the afternoon of June 12, 2024, a group of about 20 suspects carried out a brazen smash-and-grab robbery at PNG Jewelers in Sunnyvale, California. Armed with hammers, the thieves broke into display cases and stole an unknown amount of jewelry. The incident occurred around 1:27 p.m. at the jewelry store, located at 791 East El Camino Real, according to the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (DPS).

After the robbery, the suspects fled in multiple vehicles, but officers quickly spotted two of the vehicles and attempted to stop them. The drivers refused to pull over, prompting police to initiate high-speed pursuits. The chase led through the streets of Sunnyvale and eventually onto Highway 101 towards the Peninsula. While one of the vehicles managed to escape after the pursuit was called off, the second vehicle continued to flee, with suspects tossing stolen jewelry out of the car during the chase.

Police were ultimately able to track down the abandoned vehicle on Highway 101 near Whipple Avenue in Redwood City. The five suspects inside the vehicle fled on foot across the freeway into a nearby industrial area. After a brief search, officers were able to apprehend four of the suspects near Industrial Road and Britan Avenue in San Carlos. The fifth suspect was located shortly thereafter and was also taken into custody.

While some of the stolen jewelry was recovered during the pursuit, the full value of the items taken in the robbery has not been determined. Authorities continue to investigate the incident and gather information regarding the identities of all the suspects involved in the heist. The case highlights the risks associated with organized robbery crews, and police have not ruled out further arrests in connection with the crime.
