Thousands of bison were driven to lower elevations, and over 1,500 of these animals were killed, sent to slaughter, or relocated to tribes aiming to reclaim stewardship of the buffalo, which hold deep cultural and spiritual significance for Native American communities.
Erin Braaten, a photographer from Kalispell, was visiting Yellowstone with her family when she spotted the rare calf. While watching a herd of bison across the Lamar River, Braaten noticed something unusually white among them. Her curiosity piqued, she snapped a few photos using her telephoto lens, and was astounded by what she discovered—a white bison calf among the herd. Braaten described the moment as “totally floored” upon realizing the significance of the animal.
The birth has brought attention to the sacred nature of the buffalo in Native American culture, particularly the Lakota prophecy that foretold a white buffalo would appear as a harbinger of change and healing.
