Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester ‘still interested’ in now-open Delaware Senate race

The Democratic congresswoman said she would hope to have President Joe Biden’s endorsement in the race.

Democratic Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester has expressed continued interest in running for Delaware’s recently vacated Senate seat. The seat was made available after Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., announced he would not seek re-election. Blunt Rochester, a national co-chair for President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign, confirmed her interest in pursuing the position, adding that she would be hopeful for Biden’s endorsement should she decide to run.

Carper, who has represented Delaware in the Senate for several terms, urged Blunt Rochester, a former intern of his and ex-state Labor Secretary during his governorship, to consider running for the open seat. His recommendation has sparked interest in the potential candidacy of Blunt Rochester, as Delaware prepares for a 2024 Senate race in what is typically a strongly Democratic state.

In a brief interview, Blunt Rochester stated, “Like I’ve said before, should the seat become available, I’m interested. I’m still interested.” She further explained that her decision-making process typically involves thoughtful reflection and prayer. “I think about it, I pray about it and then I plan,” she said, underlining her careful and deliberate approach to such an important decision.

The potential candidacy has already stirred significant attention, with many in the political world watching to see whether Blunt Rochester will take the leap to run. Her alignment with Biden and the opportunity to potentially secure his endorsement could give her a strong edge in the race, should she decide to officially enter.

Blunt Rochester has established herself as a prominent figure in Delaware politics, serving in Congress since 2017 and gaining national recognition through her work on Biden’s re-election efforts. Her deep ties to the state and longstanding political career could make her a formidable candidate in the Democratic stronghold.

With Sen. Carper’s decision not to seek re-election, Delaware’s Senate race is now open for the first time in years, signaling a potentially competitive contest for the seat. Blunt Rochester’s decision to run would likely spark a wave of interest from other political figures and national organizations.

As the 2024 election season heats up, all eyes will be on Delaware to see who ultimately emerges as the frontrunner in this newly open Senate race, with Blunt Rochester’s candidacy one of the most closely watched developments.
